Challenge: The NHS faces ever-increasing pressures on the availability of beds. The rise in numbers of patients being admitted, coupled with the fact that many patients who are well-enough to be released cannot be accommodated with sufficient support in their home or a care-home, is developing a real crisis in being able to deliver timely care to those who need it most. In November 2016 where were 26% more delayed transfers in care than in November 2015. Delays due to waits for homecare or nursing homes rose by 47% in the same period. As the over-60 population of the UK continues to grow, this pressure is mounting, with NHS beds remaining filled for longer.
Investable Solution: Bridges founded ORLA Healthcare to provide a 24/7, 365 day-a-year service for patients with acute illnesses who would otherwise be admitted into hospital to be treated in the comfort of their own homes. ORLA’s service offers a consultant-led team of care professionals who deliver acute medical treatment and nursing care in the patients’ homes. This acute health homecare model enables the local NHS trust to improve efficiencies in clinical outcomes, freeing up precious hospital beds and savings costs.
Outcomes: In 2016 alone, ORLA treated 1,178 patients in their homes, freeing up 12,615 hospital bed days. Since inception, ORLA has freed up over 26,000 NHS hospital bed days. Importantly, 99% of patients would be ‘extremely likely’ or ‘likely’ to recommend the service to friends/relatives.
